C-Roads Antwerp - Helmond

The C-Roads project Antwerp-Helmond aimed to integrate Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems with advanced driver assistance systems and mobility services to improve road safety and liveability. TML coordinated the evaluation of the functionalities and impact of these systems, while also contributing to the wider project activities.

The C-Roads Antwerp-Helmond project aimed to integrate Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS, in particular intelligent speed assistance (ISA)), urban vehicle access restrictions (UVAR) and (urban) mobility services (truck buffering, prioritisation and multimodal information). The combination of these services should lead to improved road safety and liveability.

Both cities are convinced that the implementation of C-ITS is not a stand-alone service and that certain integration into other ITS solutions is necessary, especially with a perspective of realising automated driving in the near future. The pilot implemented, tested, and evaluated the combined services. The pilot included the development of services tailored to the priorities of both the city and the region, while recognising EU standards and regulations. Selected C-ITS Day 1 and Day 1.5 services were made available and integrated with the other services. These were made available to different types of users, such as private drivers, professional truck drivers, and active mobility users.

C-Roads Antwerp-Helmond was part of the C-Roads platform that emphasises cooperation on a holistic level to cover all dimensions related to C-ITS deployment. The pilot tested and evaluated the combined services on the Flemish TEN-T network near Antwerp and along the urban nodes of Antwerp and Helmond.

All C-ITS information was delivered via hybrid communication and met the requirements and specifications of C-Roads. The service was made available in the vehicles through (i) the use of on-board units (OBU) that also enable the combined implementation of C-ITS and ISA and (ii) smartphone applications, one of which specifically for truck drivers.

In this project, TML coordinated work package 4 (functionality evaluation, user acceptance, impact assessment, ecosystem assessment and implementation strategies) and participated in work packages 1 (C-Roads platform) and 2 (national pilot project management and dissemination activities).
