Alternatives to Belgian diesel trains

Diesel trains still run on some Belgian lines. TML is analysing for Infrabel which investment – diesel, electrification, or battery trains – offers the most social added value.
Rail transport emits significantly less greenhouse gases than other forms of motorised transport, especially when the lines are electrified. Nevertheless, diesel trains still run on some Belgian railway lines. Given that the further expansion of the railway network plays an important role in the Flemish Energy and Climate Plan 2021–2030, TML is investigating which investment option offers the greatest social added value for Infrabel.
We are comparing three scenarios: the use of new diesel trains, full electrification of the network, or minimal partial electrification combined with battery trains. The analysis focuses on four lines where diesel rolling stock is still in use today.
TML builds on the Quickscan tool for railway lines, which we previously developed for Infrabel. The tool was expanded to facilitate the evaluation of the electrification of railway lines: we adapted the tool with new figures and insights from similar electrification projects. In this way, our SCBAs support an informed choice for a sustainable and efficient rail network.
