TML developed a tool commissioned by the City of Antwerp that can indicate more accurate waiting times for cyclists and pedestrians at traffic lights. In collaboration with Siemens, traffic light schemes were analysed and parameterised so that waiting-time indications can function more intelligently based on up-to-date data.

At the request of the City of Antwerp, we developed a tool that provides a better indication of waiting times for cyclists and pedestrians at traffic lights. The dynamic light control system in use at the time had difficulty predicting an accurate waiting time. It assumed the waiting time in a worst-case scenario. During the countdown, updates occured, causing the waiting time counter to count down more slowly at the beginning than at the end. This taught us that the system of waiting time indication did not match the effective waiting time.

To make this waiting-time indication more intelligent, TML, together with Siemens, developed a tool that reads and parameterises the current traffic light schemes. Siemens read in the parameters resulting from this tool and ensured their correct interpretation. The results were used to make waiting-time indications function more intelligently.

TML used its years of expertise in traffic light controls to develop this tool.
