From 2009 to 2010
Because of the structural overload due to an increasing demand for parking availability, innovative solutions are required. The iPark4U demonstration project addressed this issue and searched for the pragmatic link between parking and technology. The broad scope of the project was to optimise the parking process in city environments, by means of the innovative and creative use of technology. At the same time, the goal was to give the driver a higher quality parking service.

In iPark4U a system was developed that, based on an on-board unit and smartphone with supporting software, gives information on the number of available parking spaces in public parking garages via in-car navigation. The system also provides routing to these parking spaces, and allows the driver to pay for the parking costs using their navigation system or cell phone.

As such, iPark4U becomes a system that combines navigation, parking, and payment as a whole.

The iPark4U niche, by which the project provides a technological innovation, is found in providing a driver with quality in-car real-time dynamic parking information. The information refers to the number of available parking spaces in parking garages, in the vicinity of the driver's destination. There is also a coupling to a paying mechanism.

In this project, TML, in cooperation with the VIM, accomplished the process validation and final reporting.
