Transport potential of De Lijn

From 2023 to 2024

TML examined potential bus transport flows by transport region in Flanders and provided a report estimating the relationships between them. This included creating a model in Python and filtering trips that could potentially be carried by bus, to support policy choices at De Lijn.

In this assignment, TML examined potential transport flows by bus by transport region, regardless of current supply. The result is a picture of the ratios between transport regions.

To this end, TML produced a report in which we estimate and frame the ratios between transport regions, with different elements of the system that we may or may not take into account.

Starting from an origin-destination matrix for Flanders, we estimated the passenger kilometres travelled per transport region. From this, we filtered trips that might be made by bus, based on distance, quality of alternatives, population statistics and so on.

TML supported De Lijn in setting up and programming a Python-based model. Furthermore, we built utility functions based on literature research.

The results are used to support policy choices at De Lijn.
