New tram lines in the Ghent railway area

From 2023 to 2024
TML supported the refinement of the Ghent Regional Traffic Model to reliably assess the effects of new tram lines on mobility and the living environment.
The expansion of the tram network in Ghent could bring about a significant shift in how people travel. To properly understand the effects of this expansion, TML supported the team at De Werkvennootschap and the Traffic Models Team in assessing the impact of new tram lines as accurately as possible.
The standard modelling approach of the Regional Traffic Model was not sufficient to capture all key factors related to the changed use of the tram lines in the analyses. The project required a refined methodology that also took better account of the effects of pre- and post-transport, transfers, and combined mobility.
TML supported the research team in improving the estimates from the Regional Traffic Model and supplemented missing data so that usage, travel times, vehicle kilometres, and environmental impacts could be calculated accurately.
