Flemish Local Digital Twins

The Flemish Local Digital Twins (FLDT) project helps Flemish municipalities develop smarter, data-driven mobility policies through local digital twins. TML contributes expertise in mobility data, traffic analysis and simulation models, and supports municipalities in developing these applications.

Local authorities face increasingly complex mobility challenges but often lack the right tools to make data-driven policy decisions. Mobility plans quickly become outdated, data is fragmented, and it is difficult to accurately assess the impact of measures in advance. With this project, we aim to help Flemish municipalities tackle mobility policy in a smarter, more visual, and interactive way through digital twins of their living environment. These are digital replicas of a municipality or local area that allow mobility scenarios and policy measures to be tested and analysed virtually.

The solution we are developing centres on the creation of local digital twins that enable local authorities to simulate and analyse traffic flows, parking pressure, school environments, or infrastructure measures. We combine real-time data, AI, interactive visualisations, and standardised building blocks. The project strongly emphasizes cooperation, knowledge sharing, and upscaling, so that other local authorities can easily join in the future.

The TML team brings expertise in mobility data, traffic analysis, and simulation models. We have already installed Telraam units and are currently creating the local digital twins in Traffic Scout/Mobilize for Tienen, Haacht, Tremelo, Herent, and Kortenberg.
Our goal is to help translate complex mobility data into actionable insights for local authorities and support the development of smart, data-driven mobility applications.
