ALTHEA uses peri-urban areas as a testing ground for climate-neutral solutions. TML researches, tests, and evaluates which innovations really work.

The European ALTHEA project focuses on peri-urban areas – the zones between cities and the countryside – in the transition to climate neutrality. In five Transition Super Living Labs (including Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Milan) and three replication regions, 59 promising solutions are being tested in the areas of sustainable mobility, renewable energy, cleaner industry, and better governance. These include smart transport networks, carbon-free energy supply, cleaner industry, and innovative models of cooperation between government, businesses, and citizens. To this end, a toolkit of 21 data-driven innovations is being developed that are not only applicable locally, but also widely deployable throughout Europe.

The project is gradually building models and local partnerships that help cities and their surrounding regions achieve their climate goals, with mutual benefits for both urban and peri-urban areas.

TML is contributing by helping to determine research questions and market needs, conducting research, testing new approaches, and evaluating the results. In this way, we want to work with cities, citizens, and local partners to learn which innovations really work and how they can be made more widely applicable.
