Incident Management

For the Belgian national government, the possibilities of incident management on highways were examined.

Incidents cause much delay and generate high costs. For this reason, incident management has been applied on highways where this is considered as necessary. There is a distinction between the preventive and curative measures.

Preventive measures try to diminish the number of incidents, and in some cases also the seriousness of them.
Curative measures are only used if incidents have already taken place and they generally aim at shortening the time which is necessary to clear the impact of the incident.

This project aims on both the preventive and curative phase:

- How can dangerous situations be recognised, so that incidents can be predicted?
- How is it possible to make the correct information available as soon as the incident has occurred?
