Sara Ochelen is trained as an environmental economist (KU Leuven and UCL Louvain-la-Neuve). She worked as a researcher at KU Leuven in the field of transport economics (calculation of external costs of transport and development of the TRENEN model for optimal prices of passenger transport). Afterwards, Sara became a civil servant for the Brussels, European, and mainly the Flemish government, where she promoted the use of economic methods and instruments in environmental policy, including modelling, impact assessment, valuation of environmental costs and benefits, smarter subsidies, environmental levies, and emissions trading. She became an expert on climate policy during her work for the climate team which involved the coordination and implementation of Flemish climate policy planning and the management of the Flemish Climate Fund. Since February 2021 she works as a transport economist for TML.
