Expert System for Traffic Data

Quality control and reconstruction of traffic data for traffic indicators

Transport & Mobility Leuven supported the Flanders' Traffic Centre of the Flemish Government by developing an expert system for traffic data. Data currently collected daily by loops in the roads has been shown not to be 100% reliable, correct and accurate. But traffic indicators, which are used to map mobility and upon which policy decisions are based, are generated based on this data. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that reliable source data is available.

In a first stage, a system for quality control was developed, including a set of tests, which detect unreliable, incorrect and missing data. The system automatically replaces these measurements if necessary. After that, several reconstruction methods were developed. Based on the corrected source data, we created traffic indicators that objectively assess and map the mobility in Flanders, as well as its evolution.
