Urbis Rail area Breda
Inventarisation of the environmental situation in the Rail area of Breda
In light of it becoming part of the high speed rail (HSR) network, the municipality of Breda (in the Netherlands) made plans to transform the railway station and its surroundings. Different spatial developments were planned for the station area, such as a new boulevard, development of businesses and facilities, residential buildings, a new bus station with bus lanes and a parking garage and other parking facilities. More information on the Rail area project can be found on www.viabreda.nl (in Dutch).
Urbis Rail area Breda
To gain insight into the current environmental situation, an inventarisation was made with Urbis of the environmental situation within the study area for the municipality of Breda. Different environmental aspects were analysed, amongst others: noise produced by rail traffic, by road traffic and by the industry; odours; air pollution produced by road traffic and external safety aspects because of the rail transport of dangerous goods. The inventarisation was partly based on earlier studies done by third parties.

Scenario Rail area Breda
Residents of the area Belcrum and the Rail area had raised concerns about the possible negative health effects of the developments in the Rail area, because of the expected growth of road traffic. Therefore there was also an inventarisation made of noise and air pollution produced by road traffic and the related nuisance and health effects, for the year 2015. For this scenario the economic development of the Rail area was taken into account, including the effects on transport flows (on top of the autonomous growth of the road traffic) and on building configurations. The planned bus station, the bus lanes and the parking facilities were also taken into account. The study focused on noise and noise nuisance, and air pollution and health effects for benzene, PM10 (particulate matter), NO2 and benzo(a)pyreen produced by road traffic.
