Projection Model for Brussels Road Traffic

Update of the projection model for energy consumption and air pollution of road traffic in the Brussels-Capital Region

In this project, we will update the reference scenario (BAU scenario) for road traffic in the Brussels-Capital Region (BCR). The current BAU scenario is aligned with COPERT4 for the calculation of emissions from road traffic. The scenario consists of a full set of inputs for COPERT4. The main inputs are vehicle stock (number of vehicles) and traffic demand (vehicle kilometres).

The update consists of 3 main parts:

  • Adaptations needed for migration from COPERT4 to COPERT5. The main changes concern the vehicle classification.
  • Updating the vehicle stock and the traffic demand based on the most recent reference data.
  • All other COPERT input parameters should also be reviewed.

An important part of the work is to try to assess the real traffic composition on the roads in the BCR, instead of relying solely on the vehicle stock as it is registered in the BCR.
