City Renovation in Sint-Niklaas
Concept support for the redesign of the Hendrik Heyman Square
The Hendrik Heyman Square project was an interesting concept task in which various substantive themes coalesced. It was not just about the design of a square, but also about thinking of an urban location. This required a strong vision on new and existing buildings, mobility, and parking; on green, water, and play zones; on living in the city, etc.
TML was part of a multidisciplinary team that primarily aimed at a
convincing and powerful spatial design, which allowed us to find
support from both within the city administration, as well as among stakeholders and residents.
For this assignment we devised four scenarios:
- a residential tower and library in the middle of the green zone
- a new library by the park
- a new library at the current location
- keeping the current library
Based on reactions during the various informational sessions, we decided to retain an adapted second scenario as the ideal, preferred scenario. In this new scenario, we aim to put the library in the green zone, making a unified area centred on the library.
Specifically for this project, TML formulated a supportive vision on the desirable future use of the car park at the Hendrik Heymanplein and the mobility in the surrounding area, based on our knowledge and experience in parking studies and policy plans for other cities.
