Job Creation Potential of Cycling

A study on job creation in the European cycling sector

The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) strives to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport and recreation. It therefore undertakes and organises different activities and events, including research activities. This study on the potential of cycling to create green jobs in Europe will support the federation’s activities with national and international government bodies.

TML estimated the number of full-time equivalent jobs in the European cycling sector today. The cycling sector includes traditional activities such as bicycle manufacturing and retail, but it also includes jobs related to building infrastructure (bicycle paths) and bicycle tourism. Finally, we also estimated employment in new bicycle service sectors, such as bike sharing or cycle logistics. In addition, we compared the employment intensity (number of jobs/added value) of the bicycle sector to other sectors.
