The Cost of Non-Schengen

The direct effects of disbanding the Schengen Area on road transport

The refugee crisis and international terror threats have led to drastic actions by national governments in the EU and Schengen Area. In this study, TML investigated the direct effects of disbanding the Schengen Area on road transport, in terms of increased wait times at borders.

The assessment started with a calculation of the amount of cross-border travel in the Schengen Area by cars, buses and trucks. Subsequently, there was an assessment of average wait times and the value of time to these road users, depending on their travel motive.
